Introduction

Upanishads look at Health as a natural state, a state of positive well being, Swāstha. The word Swāstha has two parts – Sva (Self) and stha (established). Hence, Swāstha is a state of being established in one’s own true nature. Health is not a static state but it is a dynamic reality.

In the modern age, where we think that health is a state of disease less ness , it is imperative to understand that Health is our natural state of being. In fact, our body and mind are equipped with many checks and balances and it is not an easy task to get diseases. Hence, Roga is actually an achievement!

WHO defines Health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely absence of disease or infirmity.
